Welcome to Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado & Wyoming!
In 2024, we are celebrating our 60th anniversary! Over the past 60 years we have focused on connecting, educating, and empowering to improve the lives of everyone affected by epilepsy, especially in the Colorado & Wyoming community.
We connect people to healthcare providers, support networks, and a listening ear. We educate schools, employers, and the community at large to reduce stigma and raise awareness. And we empower people affected by epilepsy with knowledge, resources, and advocacy to live their best lives.
For 60 YEARS, we have remained committed to our mission, and we will not rest until we achieve a world free from seizures.
Our Mission
The Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado & Wyoming exists so that no one faces epilepsy alone. We improve the lives of those affected by epilepsy through education, advocacy, research and connection.
We are a non-profit, charitable agency, and designated as a 501 (c) 3 organization by the Internal Revenue Service. Donations to the Foundation are tax deductible as allowed by law.
Our History
When her grandchild was diagnosed with epilepsy in 1964, Dr. Harriot Hunter incorporated the Colorado Epilepsy Association to provide support services to youth with epilepsy. Working out of her basement, Dr. Hunter and a group of dedicated volunteers began providing counseling and support to those impacted by epilepsy, while also educating the public about seizure disorders.
As the organization grew, through the addition of permanent staff, the Association became affiliated with the National Epilepsy Foundation and rebranded to The Epilepsy Foundation of Colorado. This pivotal relationship expanded our capacity to share critical resources while ensuring our fiscal independence and identity as a nonprofit serving the needs of individuals and families living with epilepsy in Colorado.
In 2020, the Foundation expanded its service area to include the state of Wyoming. We look forward to bringing programs and services to people living with epilepsy in Wyoming, and to raising awareness through fundraising events and community outreach. We are also actively working with the Spanish-speaking communities in our region to provide services for a historically underserved population.
In the decades since our founding, we have earned a reputation of providing advocacy, programming, resource development, and educational tools for both people living with epilepsy as well as those who serve this community through caregiving and healthcare.
Our logo represents the three major focus areas of our organization:
- The light of understanding
- Research leading to a cure
- A lifeline to nearly 65,000 people in our region who live with epilepsy
Through partnerships, teamwork and dedication, we work hard to maintain the integrity of this meaningful flame.
